Straight off the bat, I will give you the answer what I think it is personally from my experience. I don’t think it is something you just drift into ...I think it is a calling. BUT..............

My Personal Experience and History

I did drift into Street Photography from Celebrity Photography (frankjohn.com) and started off with street style mainly focusing on the women on the streets of London that had something going on, which is a form of street photography but not the real hardcore street photography. This for me was a natural progression from my female celebrity photography days. I then moved onto normal street photography both men and women young and old and everything in between capturing characters and moments.

The Progression into Fine art Street?

I then started mixing that with experimental stuff such as light and shadow, silhouettes and shadows and high contrast street photography which proved very popular on flickr back when flickr was still buzzing and this stuff was getting a big thumbs up from quite a few people which got me thinking. I then continued doing the normal street photography with the more experimental arty stuff increasingly on the side. Then I moved from colour to Black and White primarily influenced by Daido Moriyama the Japanese Street Photographer.

From their I started to focus more and primarily on the more arty side of street photography as in [Fine Art Street Photography and never looked back and this stuff proved incredibly popular on a new Instagram Account. Fine Art Street is what I do to this day but I now also dabble in the world of Black and White Documentary Street Photography at my new project Shoreditch with a couple of projects on the back burner which will probably take years to complete. So although I drifted into this I think it was a drifting made primarily of a calling.

My Street Photography History

I started mid to late 2015 but had a couple of years off where I did not do photography whatsoever during the pandemic, so I suppose up to the writing of this blog post about 8 years is the extent of my street photography experience at this present moment in time. Matt Stuart on a Paulie B video below

said there is a cut off point where a lot people pack in and that is around the 5 year mark when they realise how much time they have spent and how many “bangers” they have managed to get in that period of time. It’s a reality check. A lot of people pack in about that time, the calling or called types, these are the ones that carry on and realise that probably a decade is more like the amount of time you have to invest to get any sort of meaningful work of any quantity. The sort of thing that is more of book standard that will stand the test of time.

2025 has been a patchy year for street photography for myself and 2026 I have some work but I’m spending more time these days going through my back catalogue of photos and separating the wheat from the chaff. I’ve got so much work I’m spending more time putting that work out and writing about it. Some of it has never been seen before.......anywhere!

So to repeat for me the Street Photography has been a calling that has been progressive in nature similar to the celebrity photography. Quite a few of the celebrity event photographers do street photography as well and that’s what probably got me started along with Vivian Maier. She had recently died and was blowing up at the time way back in 2009 after her death and was another influence that got me aware of the street photography genre in photography. Back then in the very early days it was used just to sharpen my skills and reaction times and reflexes with a camera and served me well in the latter days of of celebrity photography where a lot of the time you are capturing micro or nano second moments........ never to be seen again and trying to earn a live from it?

Why is Street Photography a Calling?

Why would I say it that Street Photography is a calling. It’s just photography ...it’s not a religious thing...you’re not called to believe in something? BUT when you realise how hard it is to get just one “good” picture in a day or what is commonly referred to as a “banger” in street photography circles. You will more than likely get some reasonable shots in a day that you can put on Instagram or any other social media and the likes will more than likely turn up in that scrolling sort of environment. BUT photos that are good enough to put into a book are very few and far between regardless of your ability. Instagram is FREE........ a book somebody has to make a commitment to purchase it, so what ever is in that book just has to be that much better.

The Numbers Game?

It doesn’t matter how many shots you take. So you go out and you are going to take 10000 shots on that day instead of your normal more focused and selective 250-300. You take a rucksack full of spare batteries and spare cards and if it is moving I am going to shoot it sort of mentality? That will increase the chances of getting those elusive “banger” shots and you will come back with more good shots on that day…….surely???? No.... is the answer...you could go out that day and absolutely nothing is happening and you will just come back with 10000 shots of you guessed it….nothing...or at best, not much. It’s similar to the spray and pray approach, you may get something but without any focus it’s not going to amount to much. You then go out the following day and take just selective shots and take just 200 and you come away with say 1 blinder and 5 also rans that are good enough to stop people scrolling on Insta and maybe get a like. That’s the difference.

Street Photography is a numbers game, but it is just what is going on ...on the day that matters…..if nothing is happening then taking 10000, 100000 or even a million photos is not going to change that fact. Being out there and consistently in all weathers will achieve more than 10000 random shots in a day and hoping that something will turn up.

The Calling and Endurance

Getting back to Street Photography, it is a calling after realising these facts...yes it needs to be a calling as you need that to endure the inefficiency of trying to get street photos that are of any consequence. You need that calling to keep you going through the hard times or to drag you back when you are just not up for it on that particular day. Doing Street Photography for Insta likes and followers is a completely different game to someone who has been called for different reasons often much deeper in nature. One will endure the other will eventually burn out and fade away.

Recreational v Documentary Street Photography

Street Photography, what I call recreational street photography where you are capturing a man wearing a yellow hat against a blue wall as background and put it on Instagram and see the reaction is a completely different proposition to somebody that is maybe doing a project on homeless people in a city over a 2 year period or a certain street or location over a similar time frame which would probably be better in a book or zine rather than put out on social media. This I would call Documentary Street Photography. It’s the latter I would say is in the “calling” category. and many of the Masters occupy this area.

Black and White V Colour

One of the reasons I moved away from colour and started shooting in Black and White is that it removes the distraction of colour and makes you more focused on the job in hand. Women with purple hair or green hair or men with highly colourful hats or clothing are looked at in a different way when shooting in black and white. You tend to look more at the person or what they are doing rather than what they are wearing or what psychedelic hair colour they have. When shooting in black and white you see these colourful situations and you look and think “that will look like nothing in B&W” and you don’t take the shot as a result. I find Black and White gives the photos a timeless and documentary look to them and it gets you focusing on the elements in the picture rather than focusing on whether somebody has green hair.....but beyond that there is not much going on.

Time Investment and Competition

So again Street Photography is a calling and has to be because the amount of time you will be on the streets coming back with potentially nothing, sometimes in bad weather, walking for miles and miles certainly if you are taking photos of sufficient standard that they can be published in a book...you are going to be out there for years and that would include everyday maybe Monday to Friday. You will be covering a lot of mileage, there could be days or weeks where not much is happening, other times you get a truck load of good photos in one session. It’s just the way it is. 5 years seems to be the ball park for the amount of time you have to put in to get anything approaching book standard work.

Another reason it has to be a calling is that there is so much more competition out there and a lot of these street photographers are very very good. So your work has to be at least as good as theirs otherwise your work is just going to go unnoticed or skipped in preference for the work of somebody else. If you take the Fine Art Street Photography sub genre, there are stacks of people now doing High Contrast lack and White Fine Art Street work such as Shadows and Silhouettes , umbrellas and rain and water shots and more. So you have to consistently up your game to get any attention in the first place.

What has gone before?

With pure street photography it’s quite simply all been done and you are going to be up against some big names such as Matt Stuart in the UK who I think is now currently living in Holland and say Phil Penman in New York and the more recent Instagram sensation Daniel Arnold. Look at his work and that is where the bar is set before you even start. There are many other big names out there but they all have one thing in common. They are out there everyday and it was a calling for them it just has to be...that is what will keep you going through the hard times when everything seems hopeless that calling will keep you going no matter what.

You are documenting a part of the world at that moment in time through you eyes and it may seem pointless at the time but eventually these pictures become archive in status and take on a life of their own in the future. People will look back at the pictures in a completely different way say in 10 years time. Some of my photos date back almost ten years and I can see the changes already. An example would be taking a candid photo of someone using a mobile phone or city type people walking around in suits...these may not be around in ten years time. People driving in cars and going on buses maybe in ten years people could be travelling in mini helicopters or those flying cars you saw in that classic sci fi film “Blade Runner”

Conclusions

Documenting the “what we take for granted” now but will be ancient history in 20 or 30 years time is where it’s at. Put that into a book and maybe just maybe somebody will pick it up in a book store or a library and think wow this is where we were 20 or 30 years ago and will look to see who took those photos. You live on so to speak through your work.

So again Street Photography that goes beyond yellow hats and blue walls has to be a calling. To keep photographing at a sustained levels for weeks, months, years and even decades…..it just has to be a calling. Daido Moriyama has photographed since the 60’s and he is still around now at 87 and I think still shooting. That’s over 60 years he has been in the street photography genre….if that isn’t a calling I don’t know what is.

In this article we are going to look at what is the best camera for street photography. This has been done many times before but I have used quite a few different models in a street photography real world context so thought this would make an interesting blog post. But before we start the quick answer to this question “what is the best camera for street photography?” the simple and tried and tested answer is “it’s the camera you have with you at the time and always have with you” and that is your mobile not the monstrosity in the photo above.

For the longer answer I will take you on a convoluted journey of the cameras I have used and this is written by somebody that is not a gear head, but just views a camera as a tool to achieve a means to an end. BUT having the right camera and more importantly a camera that you can get on with and just gets out of the way of the photographic process.......... is for me what it’s all about.

Let’s dive in!

The early days.

I started out using a mobile in the form of an old Nokia and it did the job on the streets but it suffered from not the fastest focus and also the dreaded shutter lag where you press the button but it takes the photo a second or so later. Image quality on a PC or Laptop was also mediocre so we quickly moved onto something a bit more industrial in the form of a DSLR that I already had

The Canon 30D

This was a hangover from my earlier celebrity photographer days. Absolutely shot to death but still working and with a very loud shutter as a result. Image quality with an APSC sensor was a vast improvement over the Nokia mobile and if you know what you are doing you can get some incredible results out of it. A mere 8mp which in all honesty is more than enough for most street photography. Battery life was not amazing just 300 or so shots and the rear screen was a fairly low resolution 2.5” affair but it did the job. Capable of shooting at 5fps not that is needed in street photography but it is handy to have anyway. The downsides of this camera is that it is quite big and attracts a lot of attention on the street, the shutter was a very loud Kerr clunk. Not the stealthiest camera in the world. With regards to ISO, 400 was about as high as you could go with 800 at a push. things rapidly deteriorated beyond that into a noisy and colourful blob hail.

The Canon 40d

Bought this from a camera shop they were selling it off cheap as an upgrade to the very tired Canon 30d and it is very much a step up in the right direction. Sensor wise it’s only 2mp more at 10mp and image quality wise I couldn’t see any difference but the improvement are subtle on this camera. ISO performance was improved you could shoot at 800 ISO with 1600 being at a push unlike the 30D which was 400 and 800 max respectively.

The rear screen was bigger at 3.0” but the resolution remained the same. It had a live view facility which meant you could shoot whilst looking at the back of the screen and it was near silent in operation. The menu was also a vast improvement over the 30d and much more intuitive. A vast improvement over the 30d but it’s still a lump and hardly stealthy. You can pick these up for £70-80 all day long on ebay and they are a solid buy.

The Fuji Film XE1

These are getting quite old now but are quite expensive as they seem to be very popular these days probably due to that X Trans 1 sensor renowned for it’s filmic look especially in colour. I picked up one of these for £29.99 many years ago with a strange fault. Turn on, everything works, take 36 photos then it overheats and shuts down. turn off for 10 minutes switch back on again and it’s good again for 36 shots then it overheats and shuts down again.

Went on like this for 2 or 3 weeks then it died completely never to live again. BUT I managed to get a few shots out from this legendary sensor and yes the photos have a filmic look to them and the colours are your beautiful fujifilm colours . Also the rear screen was dead so either shot through the viewfinder which was situated range finder style or I just shot from the hip. Loved this camera with its shutter dial and with a vintage manual focus lens it had a lovely retro feel to it. But it wasn’t to be, I opened up the camera to see if it could be repaired and wasn’t impressed with the build quality at all. So time to move onto another camera

The Lumix GF3

The Lumix GF3 when it was introduced was hailed as the worlds smallest mirror-less camera but this was achieved by removing the viewfinder which many GF purists hated and it ended up being a lemon in photo sales terms. Performance wise the image quality at 12mp was fine, it was fairly snappy with no shutter lag and ISO 800 seemed to be optimum with ISO 1600 at a push.

Stick an adapted vintage lens on the front and you had a pretty nifty little street camera that I managed to get many good shots with which at the time was under £100 combined. People didn’t seem that bothered about this camera so you could get up close and personal in the city crowds. The actual camera was so small I used to hold it by the camera lens and press the shutter with my little finger. The colours were not a patch on the previous FujiFilm XE1 but the black and white output was something else.

They are an all metal and clam shell design with some plastic and are quite a sturdy camera. Couple this with a pancake prime lens and you have a very stealthy non threatening and cheaper alternative to say the Ricoh GR3 which goes for 6 or 7 times the price. The only downsides to this camera is the shutter is quite loud for a mirror-less and the grip is pretty much non existent, otherwise this is quite a decent camera with the caveat that appearance wise it’s a bit marmite and may not appeal to many hence, why you can still pick them up quite cheap.

The Lumix GX7 Camera

GAS is the only reason I upgraded to this Lumix GX7 which I’m normally immune too but I was looking for something I could use for wildlife photography as well as Street Photography and the frame rate on this camera is much faster than the GF3. This camera has an electronic shutter, a flippy out screen thing handy for shooting from the hip or low level or over the head shots. Decent image stabilisation is included in body and the pop up flash wasn’t bad. ISO 800 is good, 1600 is usable I seem to remember using 1200 quite a lot.

Black and White output on this camera is gorgeous but colour is typical LUMIX. It’s alright but not in the same league as Fuji-film or Canon. Decent grip on this camera and getting back to the electronic shutter which is near silent and a game changer in the street photography world. The downsides to electronic shutter was the “banana syndrome” would creep in on occasion an example say a golfer in mid swing the golf club could take on a bizarre banana shape instead of being straight. Better for street than wildlife in my opinion. This camera died on me within a few months by splitting in half never to return after a fall. The build quality is very plastic but otherwise a good contender as a street camera. I think the GF3 had the better build quality but not so many bells and whistles as the GX7.

The Olympus EM5

So still in the hunt for a decent wildlife mirror-less that could be also used for street photography I managed to pick up a cheap Olympus EM5 which I was hearing good things about. We are talking the original Mk1 version. Picked one up for just over £100 when they were selling back then for about £175-£225. On first impression the build quality was good and solid, the viewfinder was a vast improvement on the GX7, the ISO performance I would say was at least 1 stop better with the ability to shoot at ISO 1600 all day long...no problem with 3200 being at a push.

Black and White output wasn’t as good as the Lumix or Fuji Cameras but the colours were superb and really popped. One of the few downsides to this camera are the menu. Good grief the menu is a convoluted nightmare of a thing, but thankfully with the plethora of programmable buttons and wheels on this camera you can set it up to your personal preferences and kiss the menu goodbye. The grip is not the best either.

I’ve dropped this camera once and it still works although one of the rotating wheels has stopped working. Fantastic for wildlife photography and I got way more shots with this camera than the constantly missing Lumix GX7. For street it’s not super stealthy but it’s more stealthy than say a DSLR. Mid Stealth I would say. A highly recommended camera I still have mine but use it more for wildlife than street these days. The only downside is they seem to have gone up in price recently as the initial Micro 4/3 dump has finished and there are fewer decent examples around now so the prices have gone up. If you can pick one up cheap to moderate price they are still an excellent camera. Work well with old adapted vintage lenses a treat.

The Nikon s9100 x 3 yes 3 of them!!!

The now legendary Nikon S9100 I have owned 3 of these cameras, they are amazing little compacts made for street photography and vastly cheaper than the fixed lens ricoh gr3 but from me they carry a warning. Lets start off with the good. They are small, light, nimble, have a mega zoom around 28-400 the ISO capability of this camera is impressive you can shoot at 1600ISO all day long with pretty good results. Nobody takes any notice of it on the streets, it just looks like a disposable or toy camera. Image quality on the whole is good, the lens is decent probably better at the wider end than the longer end. The menu is reasonably easy to use. That’s the good points.

The bad points though are numerous. The motorised zoom on this camera is prone to getting stuck very easily producing a lens error, this is a common problem with this camera and not an easy fix. Battery life is mediocre about 200-220 shots. If you leave it permanently on..... it chews up the batteries even faster. The lens cover on closing of the lens seems to touch the front element causing wear marks on the lens. Shutter lag is still a problem with this camera even a premium compact such as this.

Black and White at standard output needs to be pushed in post to get the most out of the camera. Nowhere to put a lens hood on the lens. Front element prone to getting splashed in the rain. Very difficult to put a zip lock bag on this camera with that motorised zoom lens. Apart from that it really is a superb street camera probably one of the best I have used but if you are going to buy this camera get at least 2 as they will eventually pack in as they were not really designed for daily heavy use in all weathers. I payed between £16 and £40 for my cameras, you will struggle to get a fully working one for under £100 these days. In summary I can’t recommended these cameras enough but it comes with a warning “BUYER BEWARE” and “LENS ERROR” and buy at least TWO!!!!

The Canon 550D

So after going through 3 compacts, 3 mirror-less and 2 DSLR’s I’ve come full circle and bought an old Canon 550D 18MP camera which is plenty enough for Street Photography. Back in the day this camera was getting rave reviews across the board with it’s live view mirror-less capability, rich detailed back screen and decent HD video capability with the ability to mount a shot gun mic on the flash hot shoe to get even better sound quality. It’s a superb all rounder, you can pick them up for under £100, can take a few knocks, can be used in all weathers with the zip lock bag treatment, has access to a vast array of the Canon lens system, can be used with adapted vintage lenses incredibly easily.

Fantastic ISO 1600 capability with 3200 being at a push maybe even 6400. It has an APS-C sensor for good quality images. The colours are beautiful natural Canon which is what I’m used to and the black and white output is quite punchy and contrasty. It has AN ALL NATURAL OVF (Optical View finder) which I really miss with mirror-less cameras no matter how good they get. The battery life in live view mode is about the same as mirror-less in the 200-300 range. Using just the OVF you are into the 400-500 territory. The menu is a pure delight to use. It feels good in the hand with a half decent grip and has taken a beating in the short time I have owned it and it is still going strong.

The few downsides are despite it’s smaller size in DSLR terms, it still gets attention quickly…. so stealth tactics have to be adopted. It has no flippy out screen and it is not weather sealed. Apart from that it’s a superb camera probably better for Fine Art Street Photography but equally at home with Pure Street Photography in more experienced hands.

Summary

All of these cameras will come in at under £400 at the time of writing with a reasonable or decent lens or with an adapted manual focus lens. Some are better than others for street work, some are built to be used everyday, others are not. The bottom line is, it doesn’t matter how good the camera is, if it packs in or is unreliable it is not of much use. The best camera is the camera you have with you ...yes very true but a camera that works day in and day out is worth more than a camera that has every feature known to mankind but is unreliable.

The Soul of Street Photography: Can AI Truly Replicate It? Will AI Street Photography replace the traditional Street Photography done by a human being with a traditional camera?

Part 1. Introductiion

Street photography has always been more than just taking pictures in public spaces.

At its core, it’s about human presence — fleeting emotions, accidental beauty, tension, humor, loneliness, and connection captured in real time. A street photograph freezes a moment that may never happen again. It is raw, unpredictable, and deeply personal. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of generating realistic images, a difficult question arises: can AI truly replicate the soul of street photography? Can AI see and produce what a human being sees and experiences on the streets without even going there?

The answer is not as straightforward as technology enthusiasts or traditional photographers might hope.

AI can imitate the visual appearance of street photography with astonishing precision. It can recreate rainy alleyways, tired commuters, glowing neon reflections, or children running through crowded markets. Yet whether it can reproduce the emotional and human essence behind those images remains open to debate.

Street photography has historically been tied to observation and experience.

Legendary photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier, and Daido Moriyama were not merely image-makers. They were witnesses to life. Part 2 Human Street Photography V AI. A practical demonstration

I had a play around with CHAT GPT, the now well know AI client and tried to replicate a photo I took of a woman in silhouette with coffee in hand walking past St Pauls’s Cathedral in Central London.

On first appearance the CHAT GPT generated photos look technically great, are sharp and shiny but just seem to lack a certain something. Is it the moment, some human element not quite surfacing here....just seems to be something missing and you can’t quite put your finger on it but they are remarkably good and it does get you thinking is it worth going out, pounding those streets for hors, days ,week, months and years on end when all you have to do (as at May 2026) is type in some detailed prompts and you are getting pretty close to the original photo that was taken by myself. It takes about 45 seconds to a minute or so to generate an image.

Part 3 The problem with AI in Street Photography

AI, however, does not experience the world. It does not wander city streets feeling curiosity or loneliness or on the cliff edge of anticipation. It does not wait patiently at a pedestrian crossing sensing that something meaningful might happen. Instead, AI analyzes patterns from millions of existing images and generates new combinations based on probability. The result can be visually stunning, but the process itself is fundamentally different from human observation.

This distinction matters because street photography is often valued not only for the final image but also for the story behind it. When viewers see a powerful street photograph, they instinctively wonder about the photographer’s experience. What drew them to that corner? Why did they press the shutter at that exact instant? What emotions were present in the environment? The image carries traces of human intention and vulnerability. Even imperfections — blur, noise, awkward framing — can make a photograph feel authentic because they reveal the unpredictability of real life.

AI-generated street imagery, by contrast, can sometimes feel strangely hollow despite its technical perfection. The lighting may be cinematic, the composition balanced, and the details hyper-realistic, yet something subtle often feels missing. Many viewers describe this absence as a lack of “soul.” That soul may come from the knowledge that a real human being stood in a real place and witnessed a genuine moment. AI is not doing any of this.

Dismissing AI entirely would be shortsighted. Technology has always influenced photography. When digital cameras emerged, many argued they would destroy the authenticity of film photography. Later, smartphone photography faced similar criticism. Yet each technological shift expanded creative possibilities rather than eliminating artistic value. AI may become another tool in that evolution.

Is this where we are with AI in 2026. Incredibly realistic BUT still recognisable as AI but getting closer to unrecognisable by most people in the future?

Part 4 The Future of Photography and AI

Some contemporary photographers already use AI creatively, blending generated imagery with documentary work. Others use AI for editing, color grading, or conceptual experimentation. In these cases, AI is not replacing the photographer’s vision but extending it. The human artist still guides the emotional narrative, choosing what the image should communicate.

What makes this debate especially fascinating is that photography itself has always occupied a strange space between reality and interpretation. Even traditional street photography is not objective truth. A photographer chooses where to stand, what to include, and when to click the shutter. Those decisions shape the viewer’s understanding of reality. AI simply pushes this manipulation further, raising uncomfortable questions about authenticity and trust.

The rise of AI-generated imagery also challenges the future economic and cultural role of photographers.

If brands, magazines, or social media creators can instantly generate convincing “street-style” images without hiring photographers, the commercial value of documentary work may decline. Already, online audiences often struggle to distinguish between real photographs and AI-generated scenes. This blurring of boundaries risks creating visual fatigue, where images lose emotional impact because viewers no longer trust what they see.

Yet paradoxically, this may increase the value of genuine street photography. In a world saturated with artificial imagery, authentic human observation could become more precious. People may seek out photographs precisely because they document real moments and real lives. The imperfections of human photography might become a form of proof — evidence that the image emerged from lived experience rather than machine calculation.

There is also an ethical dimension to consider. Street photography has always involved complex questions about privacy, consent, and representation. AI introduces entirely new concerns. Generated images may depict people who never existed, cultures inaccurately represented, or emotionally manipulative scenes designed solely for engagement. Without accountability or lived understanding, AI risks reducing human experiences into aesthetic patterns detached from reality.

On the other hand, AI can democratize creativity. Someone without expensive equipment or technical training can now create visually compelling images through simple prompts. This accessibility opens artistic opportunities for people who may never have entered photography otherwise. Critics often fear that easier creation diminishes artistic value, but creativity has never belonged exclusively to professionals. The challenge lies not in access but in meaning.

Part 5 Conclusions

Ultimately, the soul of street photography may not reside purely in the image itself but in the relationship between the photographer and the world. A camera becomes an extension of human perception — a way of noticing details others overlook. Street photographers walk through ordinary environments searching for fragments of truth: a glance between strangers, exhaustion on a worker’s face, laughter echoing through an underground station. These moments carry emotional weight because they are rooted in lived reality.

AI can replicate appearance, style, and even emotional cues, but it cannot genuinely experience human existence. It can create a compelling and visually stunning image but it can’t create the feeling and emotion that went into the photo.

It does not fear rejection while photographing strangers. It does not feel the atmosphere of a city at midnight. It does not build memories attached to places or people. What it creates is simulation rather than observation.

That does not mean AI cannot play a role in photography. It may serve as a tool to inspire, explore new perspectives, or even assist in post-production. However, it cannot replace the human sensitivity, intuition, and lived experience that make street photography so powerful. The soul of the image lies not in the technology that creates it, but in the human story behind it. BUT as AI evolves it is getting ever closer to that humanistic inagery creation. goal.Who knows what the future will bring but this Street Photographer will continue to take his photos via a real world camera rather than resort to the AI alternative, BUT is watching very closely all of the latest AI developments.

In this article we will be looking how AI is affecting photography and what the possible future impacts AI will have on Street Photography if any.

Can it reproduce and replace photos taken by a human being. What is the future of street photography now we have AI in our midst.

Introduction

I don’t see much in the way of blatant AI Street Photography at the moment or maybe I’m missing something. I personally am seeing more street photographers than ever on the Streets of London, probably similar in New York and other major global cities.

I saw a street photographer in Piccadilly Circus, one of these more static types what I call “fisherman” types. He had a smaller type of camera maybe a Ricoh GR3 and was grabbing moments as people were crossing at Piccadilly Circus. We had a chat and AI came up in the conversation. I asked him what he thought about AI and his response was it was a bit worrying. I asked him whether AI will replace Street Photography? He said not at the moment. I said even now it’s getting in its more advanced staged I can still tell an AI photo from one that was taken by a real person.

BUT in the future he said it will get so advanced that we will not be able to tell the difference between a real photo and an AI one. When it gets to that stage what is the point pf going through all this. Currently even if you are doing what he is doing and that is standing still for hours on end in one spot then moving to another spot in the hope of getting some sort of meaningful street photos which can take hours in a day to achieve if at all. As I have said many times before “Street Photography” is a very inefficient way of creating a body of work but at this present moment in time it’s the only way that works.

The temptation of AI

With AI the temptation is growing by the day. Just type in some prompt in something like CHAT GPT or similar and you can create a street photo from anywhere around the world have something extraordinary and artificially created within it and post it on your blog or Instagram. Who is going to know the difference. Saves all that time and leg work if you have a conscience then even mark them as AI created. Who cares? Where is the incentive to carry on going out in all weathers when you can make the identical or even better or more outrageous photo in the comfort of your own home without even stepping outside the house or even having to buy a camera??

The difference between an AI generated photo and a real photo is as far as I know there is no exif data showing camera model and resolution and all the other numbers such as shutter and aperture that prove that it is a real photo taken by a person.

The two schools of thought on AI in connection with photography

I think at present there are two trains of thought on AI and photography. One thinks that photography is going to be a dying art form and that’s it photographers are a thing of the past and we are finished OR there is the more fighting attitude and take this thing on which I personally think is a hopeless task OR it’s going to become more like painting when photography arrived with a bang. Photography will become more of a niche thing specialising in areas that AI cannot replicate. Painting when photography arrived went to the more abstract areas of the art form as photography could make a portrait of a person in a fraction of the time and a fraction of the cost. I think what happened with painting will be what will happen to photography in an AI world. It won’t kill it off, but it will become a niche specialised thing producing work that probably AI can do but doesn’t look as good as something with a more human input.

The weakness of AI

The weakness of AI are - it has no feeling, no emotion, it looks to mechanical, too clinical, too sharp, the silhouettes look off, like cardboard cut outs, everything looks like a collage. Back in the early days peoples skin looked a bit plastic and fake. Now AI can replicate human skin which when viewed up close is a bit like an orange peel. AI can now replicate that now and you can see it is going to get harder and harder to tell whether this is an AI shot or a shot taken by a person. What differentiates now in 2026 will be imperfection, this will be the distinguishing mark between AI and human produced work. Human work will always have some sort of imperfection somewhere whereas AI will inherently try to produce the technically and most awesome shot BUT at the sacrifice of reality.

Eventually probably not that far in the future some algorithm will kick in where the AI will start injecting some slight human errors in there by default to bring the reality up a notch even higher than it is now. That’s where I think we are now, we are at the tipping point it is going to get increasingly hard to see the difference. So the temptation now for many photographers is to just have an idea for a photo, type in the prompt in CHAT GPT or Claude or any other AI tool and create the photo without even leaving the house? You can produce some amazing stuff but did it happen. NO. Would anybody know. Doubt it? Put it on Instagram and see what happens. Certainly in a scrolling stop for 2 seconds like environment, would anybody know or even care?

The Three Reactions to AI from Photographers

Reaction No1. Evacuate you can’t even start to compete with this thing

I think this is what the future has in store for photography concerning AI. I think in the future photography will go the same way as painting back in the day. It is already replacing a lot of photography in the commercial world. I know a photographer who has been in the Fashion game for a long time , he had a studio, went travelling around the world to various locations but he ended up doing catalogue work say for Boohoo, Next and other retailers and also adverts. The grass roots part of the fashion industry but the money was there but not any more with the arrival of AI.

AI can replicate a tropical island, a shot on the streets of New York, Paris or London. You can create a specific model in AI, you can create the scenery and backdrop in AI then just upload photos of the clothing or product that is being promoted and tell AI to get the model wearing the clothing in that location and background. Job done! I’m seeing it in advertising now as we speak. As a result........ this particular photographer has shut his long running website down which was in his name.com and his domain name is up for sale and the portfolio website is no more.

He is obviously not even contemplating going into another branch of photography. He has seen what is happening here, and for him it’s the end. It’s a shame and it really strikes home when it’s somebody you know personally. I think he still has a token presence on Behance but it hasn’t been updated for ages, and still has his Instagram but now it’s just focused on his personal life rather than photography. I think he still takes pictures but nothing on a commercial basis.

Reaction No2. Take AI head on and shoot like a Maniac!

That’s what I call the first response to AI photography and that is to pack in, you can’t compete with it. The second response to AI and it’s explosion in the world of photography is the Phil Penman response Phil is a Street Photographer in New York . He has a very good body of work, has a a big following on Instagram in the 100’s of K’s. As far as I’m aware he is still shooting street with a camera and his attitude is “take AI on” as in take it head on and he seems to be succeeding.

He is shooting basically like a maniac every waking hour, and he is shooting incredibly human focused and human work and just fox AI and in the meantime he is building a further huge body of work. He has produced books, done exhibitions does workshops, talks etc. He is using AI as a catalyst and the competitor that he has to beat, to get him out there on the streets and shoot like he has never shot before. He knows he won’t beat it, but he is competing on his own terms with it, as a result it’s stretching him to produce an amazing body of work. It’s a win win situation, if AI eventually beats him.......... he still has that vast body of work . He hasn’t lost anything!

Reaction No3. Explore the weaknesses of AI

Another approach is coming from another well known photographer not necessarily in the street genre but still relevant. We are talking one of the Northrop’s part of the former Tony and Chelsea duo. I watch their videos occasionally more for the wildlife and general topics such as the one where they called out Instagram .In this video which is very interesting Tony Northrop was talking about this flaw in AI as in the imperfection thing. This is the route he is taking, he is taking on AI not trying to compete with it but playing on the current weakness of AI and that is AI is into perfection.

Creating a photo so good that no human can compete with it, but the trouble is when they are so good they end up looking like those old HDR pictures, they look too perfect verging on unreal. Focusing on the human elements that are missing producing slightly imperfect and very human pictures. What got him onto this he recently produced one picture from a new camera with a high resolution sensor and an ultra sharp ultra wide aperture lens.

He took a picture as in a portrait of this woman and she is there looking sharp as anything and popping about from this superb lit background in a blurred bokeh effect. He showed the photo to the person and they said “that is superb ....... it looks like AI”. He realised then “Ahhhhh” maybe I should be going the other way. He has started looking now at disposable cameras, old compact cameras, and taking pictures, what I have been doing for some time, taking pictures with not so sharp lenses and not so sharp sensors but good enough and these cameras and lenses have flaws and imperfections. Those photos then stand out as the more human photos.

Summary

That’s the three different approaches I have come across with regard to AI and Photography. First one pack in, call it a day and reminisce about the good old days. Secondly do what Phil Penman is doing and take it head on and use it as a motivator to shoot like a crazy person and produce a huge volume of work in a record amount of time. OR 3 take the Tony Northrop route and exploit the weaknesses of AI and take a step back in technology terms and produce good work but with human imperfections evident that make anybody say “that photos is definitely not AI”.

The future

But what is the future? I think AI will be used increasingly instead of photography. It will certainly affect the professional market and in some areas it already has, my friend is testament to that fact. There are some things AI cannot replace yet or even in the near future. Say events like what I used to do “celebrity event photography” say the red carpet, AI always has to go backwards to produce something for now, it can’t go forwards and predict things. It can’t replicate what’s not there and when you are in say a photographers pen waiting for the stars to arrive, AI can’t magically produce these photos and predict what dress, make up, hair style that star is going to have on the night, it can’t do that yet.

So that job I think is safe for now. I would say modelling, fashion and beauty will be replaced mainly by AI. Another safe haven, again in event work would be wedding photography. No bride on earth is going to want an AI replication of their wedding no matter how good it is. They may think about it, and it saves a lot of money in hiring a photographer. It’s the most special day of their life, they don’t want to trust it to AI and have people looking at them after the event looking at the photos saying “these are AI”. Wedding photographers that pick up on the very human elements and candid moments of a wedding event, make the shots very human, packed with emotion, I think it is something that AI even further down the line will not be able to do it.

There are many other examples where now or in the near future AI will not be able to compete but as it constantly evolves and becomes more mature, it’s capabilities will increase many times from what we see now. So am I packing in. No .....still carrying on and business as usual!

What on earth makes some photos good and others mediocre and the rest just rubbish! Can it be distilled down to a single thing or is it something much more complex in nature. Does the viewer have the final say on whether a photo is good or not or does the photographer always control the proceedings?

What do some of the master photographers say?

We could go on here but you get the general idea. There is no universal agreement on one particular thing that makes a good photo. That’s from the masters although emotion comes up frequently.

What do I think makes a good photo?

Where do I stand on this. What makes a good photo? I wish I knew but you know it when you see it. You can have a good subject, good moment, good background, good lighting, good composition and the photo could still be at best mediocre.

Story? A good story in a photo makes it a good photo? I don’t buy that…. a landscape, rose photo, a portrait none of these have stories but they can be amazing none the less. If it’s a documentary style photo then yes a story is then important.

Emotion? Contained in the photo or experienced by the viewer. A beautiful sunset will create the latter but will not have the former? So what Elliott Erwitt is saying is it’s the viewer decides whether a photo is good or not.

Likes? Yes they can be an indicator but are not 100% reliable. No likes at all unless it’s something on a new blog/instagram etc is probably a very reliable indicator that the photo is garbage. Who is liking your photos is probably more important. If people that have good work or are leaning more to the creative side are giving the photo a thumbs up…… you have a good photo.

Jumping Out? Personally I think what Mark Cohen said on the “Dark Knees” video carries considerable weight. He said “when I take the roll of him out of the fixer and see those 36 negatives and look and see “look at that one”. In digital does the photo jump out as a thumb? On viewing in full size does it confirm it is good? That ‘s a good photo!

On viewing a feed you suddenly see a photo that catches your eye, you click on it, regardless of the genre you can’t stop looking at it. If you’re still looking at it after a minute or more that’s a good photo. If you come back after a couple of hours and the same thing happens again with the same photo. You’ve got your answer.

If you have viewed a photo and you can’t get it out of your head even years later…. that’s a good photo.

The Indefinable? I could go on here for days but what I ‘m trying to say is there is some indefinable thing at play in these good photos that goes beyond story, emotion, composition, moment. I wish I knew what it was, I think it has something to do with “tension” within the photo. That’s a whole other blog post.

Garry Winogrand. What does he think?

What does the Master Garry Winogrand have to say? This is where I will hand you over to Garry Winogrand. A Master, who is no longer with us. In this video he is interviewed by Barbara Lee Diamondstein. The video is old, the quality is awful, it jumps around in places. The first five minutes or so she’s just warming up. Perservere and you will be rewarded.

She asks the crucial question “what makes a photo alive or dead? Listen to the answer he does not mention the more traditional reasons what makes a photo good. I’ll say this, this video is probably the best 30 odd minutes you will ever spend if you are a photographer.

She gets such priceless information out of this man. Tilted horizontals, frame placement, playing games with the photo viewer. He gets agitated at times, she backs off and then perseveres.

He also liked photographing women like myself. Hear his views on that. Another character, I think they make the best Street Photographers.

Watch and learn, it will change how you take photos. I guarantee it! That’s the difference between a Master and an average photographer. It’s not the equipment, it’s how they see…. although he did shoot with Leicas! The photographic eye....ahhhh that’s a whole pandoras box for another article.

Final video is Garry Winogrand in action I think in California. It’s an eye opener on how to get close to people. It’s very old but still hilarious! I think as a Street Photographer you need to be confident and also have bucket loads of audacity. Garry Winogrand certainly has those qualities in spades. He didn’t get his photos by hiding in a bush. Just saying!

Why I have switched to Monochrome or Black and White Street Photography and WHO was the influence that brought about this radical change.

A blog post in two parts, first an in depth look at the photo Vauxhall that marked the beginning of this change and the second we delve into the Japanese photography master that brough about this radical change from colour street photography to black and white

Part 1 Vauxhall.

The photo above is called Vauxhall and it’s named after the area in London not the car brand. This photo was captured with the sole intention of getting something with a huge amount of negative space. It’s certainly here.Before this photo I was shooting purely colour street photography!

In reality it’s a photo of a man staring at his mobile at the end of a tunnel in a void of black. It doesn’t get anymore banal than that. The challenge is to turn banality into something beautiful.

Exposing for the limited highlights and dropping the shadows creates a battle between light and shade. We have tension.We have leading lines that draw you to the silhouette, we have a frame in a frame that draws you to the silhouette. We have reflections and more.I had to beat the living daylights out of the sensor and then the file again in post to get those Daido-esque blacks.

For me it works. If the whole scene was evenly lit the man would be an ant within the frame, the lights would fade away, the drama and tension would disappear. It would just fall flat on its face. It certainly rocks in black and white but is it any good?…..which brings me onto Part 2.

Part 2: Who made me switch to Black and White Street Photography from Colour?

I like the work of Saul Leiter and Ernst Haaas. They were mainly colour pioneers back in the day when Black and White was the accepted norm amongst the Masters and the establishment. They were Rebels you could say. Only recently has the name Daido Moriyama appeared on this blog. He is a living master now at 80+, still shooting as far as I know.

There are countless articles on this Japanese Master Street Photographer. He has an army of books, some rarer ones sell for large amounts of money. He was famous for using the Ricoh GR (film version) in his early days. He was a member of the controversial Provoke Movement in his early days. He has been exhibited globally. He takes photos by feeling the photo. In short he is something else and difficult to pigeon hole.

Famous for his lips and tights photos, he loves photographing women, loves animals, ripped posters, everyday items that are banal in nature. His photos have an other worldly and almost spiritual quality about them.

First Introduction to Daido Moriyama

First saw his work in a London library a couple of years ago on a rainy day just to get out of the rain for a few minutes.Can’t remember the name of the book, all I remember was it had a red cover, but I thumbed through it. It took ages, probably a minute a page, don’t remember any text AT ALL, All I remember was just shaking my head in disbelief and muttering “WTF”. A truly brain frying experience in a good way. I crawled out of that library feeling my photos that I was taking at the time were complete and utter garbage.

I was shown in a shocking way the gulf between mediocrity and brilliance. It’s terrifying but it gave me the kick up the #ss I needed. The gulf is still there years later but the gap is closing. He was hitting it out the ball park every time in his 20s, you can’t change that…….that’s genetic.All these Masters have one thing in common though. They shoot pretty much everyday!

I have to say though as good as his colour pics are for me they are not a patch on the black and white work. His black and white is just great, great, great, great his colour is nice, nice, nice, great.

The Daido Moriyama distinctive style?

He was really out there back in the day, cutting edge. Even today it looks radical. Gerhard Richter the painter said in an interview all work of quality has timelessness. This work is timeless.What makes his work stand out. The pitch black blacks and the brilliant whites and battle and interaction between the two. The grain, the blurs, the gradation, the unconventional composition, the viewpoint, the banal subjects transformed into something mesmerising. He is certainly outside the box and incredibly difficult to replicate.

It’s also a metaphorical single digit to the art world of technical excellence……….but here’s the thing they love his work. His influences are William Klein and Andy Warhol who were also single digit wavers to the establishment.

Never underestimate the effect of looking at powerful images created by a master will have on you. Be careful what you look at.

You can’t copy his work, it’s a one off. You can try and replicate the blacks and whites, using a preset for grain, try and get that warped blurred look. It won’t look like his work just a poor imitation.Believe me thousands have tried. The way he sees is not how normal people see. He sees the unseen, what most people miss and then turns it into a masterpiece. He then rinses and repeats over and over again.You can’t even begin to compete with that.

Closest modern day equivalents?

The closest I have seen also from Tokyo is the controversial Tatsuo Suzuki, another black and white shooter who is blowing up recently. He is the founder of the Street Collective “Void Tokyo” with a dozen or so other emerging street photographers with some superb pioneering work.Tatsuo admits he uses models sometimes in his street scenes, some do look to me like dual layer photos. He is a sort of Japanese Bruce Gilden who was dropped by Fujifilm for his controversial methods of getting his pictures.

Finally getting back to my photo Vauxhall. It has the Diado blacks and whites but he wouldn’t take this shot.This photo is too sharp and shiny, glossy and too digital looking. BUT a modern day big name……say Phil Penman in New York would take this shot….for sure. Another purely B&W shooter.

In summary Daido Moriyama has influenced my work to the extent I have switched from colour to a beginner a novice in Black and White. BUT I accept that my work will never look like his and I don’t intend it to, but it certainly has helped in defining my “style” a long road that all of us are continually on and to Daido Moriyama I am truly thankful.

Photography is the act of fixing time, not of expressing the world. The camera is an inadequate tool for extracting a vision of the world or of beauty.

Although photography is called an art, the photograph is not a tableau , born of nothing; it is not something unique, like a painting or a sculpture or the productions of the other arts. It is rather like an optical machine developed to such a point that nowadays even a cat can take photos.

For me, capturing what I feel with my body is more important than the technicalities of photography. If the image is shaking, it’s OK, if it’s out of focus, it’s OK. Clarity isn’t what photography is about.

Part 1 Photo Study. City Traders.

Taken in Central London in the City Area. This is straight out of camera, no cropping, some sliders and that’s it. The lights in a fan formation leaping out of the window were the first thing that caught my eye, and secondly the busy street scene reflected with the very bright building adding some extra contrast. Two sets of leading lines and we have I would say three layers going on here. It’s a photo that could have been taken as is, but it needed a human element to add the finishing touch. Three City Trader types suddenly turned up out of the blue and the exposure makes them look in silhouette but you can just make out some detail in the shadows but not enough to identify them. Job Done.

As this blog post is primarily focused on “Photographic Style”, this photo “City Traders” is pretty much the way my photographic style is heading. Three other similar photos with this high contrast moody, dramatic and crunchy look including St Pauls, Alley and Vauxhall .

It takes time to arrive at your Photographic Style, maybe years, but those four photos show an emerging style that will probably evolve further over time….. which brings us nicely onto Part 2.

Part 2 Finding Your Photographic Style

When you take pictures you don’t want your pictures to look like everybody else’s. You want photos that will stand out and that have a certain signature. These will always be favoured over the same old same old also rans. These are the photos that have a certain style infused into them which makes them instantly recognisable as taken by a certain photographer. Achieve that and you have found your own photographic style.

BUT what is your photographic style and how do you find it? This is just my personal take on this topic, it differs from the accepted wisdom out there. Make of it what you will.

Where I stand on this is quite simple, your photographic style is HOW YOU SEE THE WORLD and COMES FROM WITHIN and then how that is transferred into the finished article as in photo, painting, music or whatever. It’s your own personality and character, your DNA, your fingerprint infused into your work creating a UNIQUE thing staring back at you with every photo you take.

What your photographic style isn’t

What it isn’t, is what sort of camera you use, film or digital, whether you shoot black and white or colour, using Instagram filters or combinations of them, presets or cranking your colour settings on vivid to max neon setting. Those are a “look” but the original contents of the photo remain unchanged. These don’t affect how you see things originally.

What affects how you see things are your personality, your life experiences. Using a 24mm lens will change how you see things compared to a 50mm or 135mm, not the camera body itself. If you are 5ft tall you will have a completely different perspective on the world to someone who is 6ft 4. How you shoot will affect your style, are you aggressive and invasive or are you unobtrusive and fly on the wall type. Do you shoot at eye level or from the hip. From the distance or ultra close up. All this will greatly affect your style and the end result.

How Daido Moriyama has influenced my style?

One of the masters that has influenced my work is Daido Moriyama who has a very unique style. His genre is Street Photography but that is not his style. His photographic style is characterized by how he invented a visual language, rejecting the pursuit of technical precision in favour of grainy, blurry and high contrast images, produced by a compact camera which are snapshots with dark and harsh spotlighting and mysterious backgrounds.

Some say his style starts AFTER he has taken the photo in the post processing and printing stage, others say it’s in camera, others a mixture of the two. But a Daido photo is a Daido photo, colour or black and white, it’s an easily recognisable style that even 60 years later stands out and has stood the test of time.

I would say your photo STYLE comes from WITHIN and your photo LOOK is the result of external factors that are applied to give the final result. That’s my take on it, others may disagree.

How do you find your style?

In street photography in particular in these modern times I would say a lot of street photography looks very Saul Leiter if you are leaning to the Fine Art end of the spectrum or masses out there look like the work of Alex Webb. They are good work maybe even superb but it’s a copy of somebody elses style. Another style is Bruce Gilden with the up close and in your face look with a 28mm lens. But there is only one Bruce Gilden. His work is a true reflection of who he is.

My advice is experiment, experiment and experiment some more and go outside your comfort zone. Most importantly know yourself, find your genre that reflects yourself and fits your personality, look at other work that seriously RESONATES with you past and present in all genres, look for common factors and then get out there and shoot like a wild thing. Try to make what resonates with you that has been twisted and is very much you and nothing really like the work that resonates.

How long does it take to find your Style?

It takes time and varies from person to person, probably years….. but after thousands maybe tens of thousands of photos, the mist will clear, something will emerge and you will one day take a photo that stops you dead in your tracks and you will see that this is the photo you have been trying to take all this time that is “ME”. Then start shooting to get more photos just like that again and again in different situations. You are now in the beginning stages of finding your style….just the beginning and a portfolio of your work is starting to emerge.

There are videos out there that give shortcuts or “hacks” to this. I haven’t watched them, but the ones below I recommend will open a door and they all agree it takes time. It’s not an overnight thing, but once you have found your genre, look and STYLE, it forms the very foundation of your work and says who you are, what you are trying to say and how you see the world in your own UNIQUE way. It will elevate your work above the also rans and may inspire others which I think is the ultimate accolade.

Surely if you call your work Fine Art on this website ..... then it must be art, so why write an article like this in the first place? Read on.

Art and Photography today?

According to the major highly respected art establishments such as MOMA in New York and Tate Modern in London and other major institutions around the globe, photography is indeed an art and is displayed in these establishments....... end of conversation.

A lot of photographers think that the photos they take are art and they also call themselves an artist. So again photography must be art....surely? .A lot of it looks like art as well, certainly a lot of my own Fine Art Street work does..... BUT..... does that make it art?

The spanner in the works and the cage rattler?

A video I watched probably years ago no longer on You Tube had a profound effect on my views on photography as an art form and forms the very foundation of this article.

The video was made by somebody in the States who I have followed for some time who shall remain nameless but has some controversial and confrontational views that challenge the status quo. A rebel of the purest form, a musician and documentary photographer that covers harrowing subjects in black and white with film and digital. He has some self published books one has been used in a State Prison as a warning and essential read for Prisoners....it’s that powerful. He now lives off grid in the desert. People who follow this very intelligent guy will know who he is from this description, he is a one off type. I would class him as an extreme version of myself. He’s something else.

At the time of writing his You Tube Channel seems to have been wiped off the face off the planet by himself or You Tube who knows, either way I can’t link to the video. I think it was a live video with chat but I can remember it still now years later it was that good. It was in black and white. It burnt itself on my brain and I remember just staring into space and shaking my head in disbelief muttering WTF at the end. It takes a lot to rattle my cage but my cage had been rattled and quite violently. This article has been years in the making but finally it’s here and full credit to this guy even if he hasn’t been named or no link to the video.

The definition of Art?

In this video he talks about how the definition of art has changed under Post Modernism that dates back to its early days in the 50’s and 60’s

He came up with two common definitions for art that exists today in our post modern times that seem to be floating around at the moment?

1. Art is something that makes you feel

2. Art is beyond human definition

He then came up with the definition for art that existed for centuries until Post Modernism arrived and it goes something like this

”Art is multiple extractions from reality that are brought together and reasembled into a new creation that did not exist before that is subject to the artists will and expression”

He then went on to say that the classic arts such as Music, Film, Theatre, Painting, Writing, Drawing and Sculpture fit this description. In each instance you are starting with a blank canvas then creating something that didn’t exist before, something that is subject to the artists will and expression.

Examples:

- Multiple words to make a poem or a book or Literature from a blank page

- Multiple notes to make a song or music from a blank sheet

- Multiple brush strokes and colours to make a painting.from a blank canvas

- Multiple clips, B roll, colour grading, sound and effects and fades to make a film, movie or video from nothing

He then goes on to say that under this definition photography is not an art. It just isn’t. Photography captures the pre given reality, there is no blank canvas. Even Daido Moriyama the Japanese master Street Photographer on a Tate Modern video said he doesn’t class his photos as art, they are just photos.

In photography, to capture say a sunset you have to have a sunset. If it’s a cloudy day or raining or at night you can’t capture a sunset in photography. However at night, raining or a cloudy day you can create a painting of a sunset even indoors from what is inside your head.

This video was about an hour long and he had some intelligent photographers on this video challenging this definition and in the end they couldn’t win the argument with that definition. He said at the end it’s very difficult to challenge that definition of art and photography fails to meet it! What you have to do is use the modern definition for art, the two mentioned previously and then photography suddenly becomes an art.

Are even the Masters subject to this defintion of Art?

Even the Photography Master Ansell Adams would struggle to take on this definition. He went back multiple times again and again and again to the same place to get the exact lighting and look he was after with his famous landscapes. He had no control over those elements.

The photography Master Eugene Smith is another example mentioned in this video for dodging and burning and using bleach in his film process. This guy said with this process we are approaching art.... but it’s still not art due to the process involved.

What’s my Definition of Art?

My definition is even simpler. Art is:

”Something that is inside that is trying to get out and manifest itself in the real world by its chosen person and medium”

Again under this definition Photography is not an art. You are capturing what you see in front of you. It’s on the outside and you are bringing it in onto a chosen medium either film or a digital sensor. There is no blank canvas, there are no multiple extractions from reality, it’s just a single capture of a moment in time. It’s art in reverse!

What throws this argument?

BUT Here’s the catch as far as I’m concerned. I think some artistic skill or talent is involved and marks out good photographers from the mediocre. I also think some considerable artistic ability will mark out a rare Master from a good photographer. I also think this is genetic. I have seen it time and time again those exceptionally gifted photographers not always but more often than not tend to have some artistic talent based on the classic arts and one of their parents may have been artistically gifted. I would say musicians and painters in particular seem also to be incredibly talented photographers. This is no coincidence.

So, although I would say photography is not a classic art in itself (we are talking the process here) there is some art involved. I call it the Photographic Eye. That is where the art is as a photographer. The ability to see what most people don’t see and create it with their chosen medium which would be a camera. So the creative process in this instance is coming from inside but the actual process of taking the picture is not art itself according to the Pre Modernism definition.

Conclusion

As a Fine Art Street Photographer using the word ART to describe what I do.... what do I call myself? I call myself a Creative and a Photographer not an Artist but the end result looks like art AND some artistic ability is required to produce the photos you see here at Pavement Pulse. If I was say a Painter AND a photographer then yes I would call myself an artist but just a Photographer then NO.

Garry Winogrand the Master Street Photographer when asked in an interview whether he considered himself an artist replied along the lines of “maybe or possibly”. When asked what do you class yourself as.... he said quite clearly “I’m a Photographer”

This article is probably more Art than the Fine Art Street Photography that appears on this website with regards to artistic process. It’s something inside that has been trying to get out for some time and has manifested itself in the real world in it’s chosen medium of writing via myself and a mobile. It’s from a blank canvas written on a mobile that started off with me staring at a white screen. It has been subject to the artists will and expression. It’s multiple extractions from reality as in multiple words brought together and reassembled into something that didn’t exist before. It now exists out in the real world and not in my head. That’s ART!

Final Words

Everything expressed here is opinion. Art is highly subjective. Where do I stand on this? I agree 75% with what was stated in the video but 25% I still think that some art as in “The Photographic Eye” and some artistic ability is involved to produce a photo of some significance. Will it change how I describe this website. No it stays as Fine Art Street Photography with photography being the important element in that title. The Fine Art in Fine Art Street photography merely refers to the “aesthetic” which distiunguishes it from regular street photography, rather than the process involved BUT the word art doesn’t make me an artist!

Creative Inspiration

Creative inspiration can come from a number of sources and can provide the spark to your own creative ideas. It’s the difference between creative block or what is known as “writers block” amongst those that work in literary circles. In this article we will focus on Locations in London that can act as a catalyst to unleash those creative forces.

The Creative Mojo?

As a Fine Art Street Photographer, it helps if the creative juices are flowing, it can make the difference between a day filled with no hoper images or just a couple of mediocre shots. When you have your Creative MOJO then out of a couple of hundred shots you may have a dozen that are borderline good enough for social media and maybe just maybe 1 or 2 which are good enough to include in a portfolio what are commonly known in street photography circles as “bangers”. That’s on an exceptionally good day. some days you come back with 1 or 2 mediocre, some days you come back with nothing at all. That’s just the way it is with Street Photography, but making sure you are firing on all cylinders in creative terms will increase your success rate ten fold. i guarantee it.

Location is important!

The trick is to keep creativity levels at a high level. Here are some places or locations in London in Fine Art Street Photography terms that I have found to kick start the day and get the creative mojo moving in the right direction. Some well known places here and some surprises. These all work for me, they may not work for everybody else. Most are well known, some less..... maybe mainly by Londoners.

It makes no difference the point is these places have proven time and time again for myself , when you are up against the wall in creative terms trying to produce Fine Art Street Photography, these locations have proven themselves to be good kick starters to get the day on a roll and produce at least decent results which is what is expected of a Fine Art Street Photographer especially one that is on the streets of London.

The Creative Top Ten Location in London

My Top Ten Creative juice inducing locations in London and the best times to visit them. It all depends what you are trying to achieve, lonely silhouette shots or crowds, pick your times wisely.

1. Bank Station: Rush Hour

Absolute chaos. What I do is get there about between 7-8am right in the thick of the rush hour and rush through the crowds like a mad thing snapping here there and everywhere. Best is the Waterloo and City Line. Some superb Fine Art Street opportunities. Try high level and low level shots. You will get some strange looks but it goes with the territory.

2.Kings Cross /St Pancras Station: Rush Hour

Same as Bank Station and around the same time. Much bigger as you have the main line terminus station above ground and the tube below ground levels. Explore all the tunnels, aerial shots of people coming down the stair, people charging through the ticket barriers, extreme lighting, escalators, piano players at St Pancras the list goes on. Just like Bank station the peak time is 7-8ish. Never tried in the evening. Also the surrounding area outside the station is a hive of activity. You could spend a day there, come back the following day and get more completely different Fine Art Street shots again.

3. Waterloo Station: Rush Hour

More of the same. May have to check with Security before you photograph at the main line station. You have again the main line terminus which is huge, you have the Underground with again the highly recommended Waterloo and City line if you are after maximum crowds at peak time. Outside of Waterloo station there are a number of superb locations including the roundabout near the station and the subways at the IMAX. Very busy area and a huge number of creative opportunities. Go a little further and you have the South bank and the Royal Festival Hall

4. Borough Market and London: Bridge Early or Lunchtime

If you have a creative flat battery it will be fully charged after about half an hour in Borough Market. Get their before 10am if you are looking for quieter more reflective shots and get their lunchtime if you are looking for full on crowds in a hectic foodie environment. Lighting can be challenging in this place so higher ISO’s will be the order of the day. Also the food vendors are constantly on the look out if they are being photographed. The area around Borough Market including Southwark Street, Borough High Street, Tooley Street, London Bridge Station and More place provide further opportunities for the Fine Art Street Photographer who is looking to take their game up to the next level.

5. Leake Street Arches aka Banksy Tunnel : Early before 10am

The Banksy Tunnel which is right under Waterloo Station has been kept separate from Waterloo as it is a one off and has it’s own identity. Full of street art and graffiti in the Banksy vain, this has to be your first port of call if you really are struggling. It’s not really a Street Photography venue but a place where you can appreciate other artists work and it may trigger something inside you. When you have finished there you can head to Lower Marsh Market and spot some street photog opportunities especially at lunchtime when the place is really buzzing with the street food vendors.

6. One New Change : Rush Hour or Lunchtime

One of those top locations you just have to go to if you are a Fine art Street Photographer. Extreme lighting, stranger angles, aerial views, St Paul’s reflections and vistas, high level, low level, reflections and more. A Fine art Street Photographer paradise. If all else fails this is top of the list to get some creative energy flowing.

7. The City Alleyways : After Rush hour AM or Golden Hour

Not so good on a cloudy day but when it is a bright sunny day the City Alleyways are good places for high contrast black and white fine art street photography. Lots of extremes between light and shadow, surprisingly quiet most of the time and an absolute haven from the rush hour spectacle that is London during these times. Good for silhouettes and shadows. Again you could spend a whole morning here and come away with some superb images if all the elements come together that make a good photos happen on the day.

8. Shoreditch inc Brick Lane : Lunchtime Onwards

The old favourites Shoreditch and Brick Lane where you are launched into another world of old meets new London and the Street art capital of London bar say Leake Street at Waterloo. Weekends are busier but some of my best shots have come from the slightly quieter mid week. Endless opportunities are here, silhouette and shadows against street art backdrops, reflections, characters, quirky fashion, tourists, food vendors, the box park, the back streets. The list goes on.

9. Docklands: Rush hour or Lunchtime

Docklands is a bit out of the main Central London loop but it is another world and if you are struggling to get anything say in the West End, come out to Docklands and enter a futuristic landscape where endless Fine art Street Photography situations will arise. Reflections from Water, Glass, Mirrors, The River, Canary Wharf Station, The Underground Shopping Centre, The Docklands light Railway and the Stations. Another location where you could spend a day but still not do it justice. Another guaranteed unblocker of photographers block

10. The Parks (exact opposite of Urban) Early morning best

The parks such as Hyde Park, Regents Park in particular are not really prime street photography locations but I have used these places as a high contrast launch from a very natural environment to straight into the hustle and bustle of say Oxford street or Knightsbridge nearby. The high contrast between the two can provide a spark to get the creative battery at full power.

Conclusion

Just a few places where as a Fine Art Street Photographer can go in London to get your Street Photography session off to a flying start. You may have noticed I have not included places like Covent Garden, Soho, Oxford street, Regent Street, China Town, Camden Market, The Barbican or even Tate Modern. I think you need to be firing on all cyclinders for those places in creative terms as they have been shot millions upon millions of times . There are plenty of Fine Art Street photography opportunities in these areas but from my experience good old Fashioned Street photography more focused on capturing “moments and characters” is what these places are really all about.

How on earth do you get your creative mojo back when you are suffering “creative block”. Is it a permanent state of affairs and you will never be creative again or is it more temporary and something that you have control over? Is it a flick of a switch stuff to get your creativity back or is it subject to time constraints or is it more external factors?

Intro

As a creative it is unavoidable that at some stage in your creative endeavours no matter who you are and what you are doing, you will come across the dreaded “creative block” commonly experienced by writers as “writers block” but will be experienced by painters, musicians, videographers or anybody else engaged in the creative fields. It goes under different names for each field but the result is the same. What seemed easy, flowing and explosive one day is strangely absent, flat and in the “nothing seems to happening” territory.

Is it the “Muse”?

Some call the “creative Block” the disappeareance or absense of their “muse” which is a whole different blog post right there, which suggests a more external influence. Others say they are just not in the mood which would suggest a more internal creative process and something we have more control over. Either way when you have a creative flat battery nothing is happening and it just seems no matter what you try to do..........it’s still not happening..... and it seems like it never will happen.

Creative Block when results are expected?

This is especially worrying when you work in one of the creative fields and having a bad day creatively is not an option and results are expected on a daily basis. How do they cope with it, they must do something otherwise they would be out a job.

I’ve read a number of articles on this and I’m not going to repeat what has gone before, just do a search for “creative block” and you will get stacks of articles on this topic. What I’m going to do with this article is say what I have gone through personally and how I have dealt with it. This is more in the realm of Fine Art Street Photography

What is Creative Block?

Typing in “creative block” in Google search and looking at the aI overview you come up with this

Where Does Creative Block Occur?

Anywhere where there is an art form and a creative process involved as in creating something then this blockage can occur and can cover areas such as

* Fine Art photography (what I’m involved with these days)

* Painting and illustration

* Writing and poetry

* Music composition and performance

* Filmmaking and cinematography

* Design (graphic, fashion, interior)

* Sculpture and mixed media

The area that I am primarily involved in is Fine Art Street Photography. Some days I go out on the street and it just seems to happen. Other days it’s just not happening at all. This is not something that happens once in a blue moon, it happens regularly. Sometimes I go out on the street and it’s happening for hours then just like a light switch being tuned off, it’s gone and then strangely comes back an hour later.

Why Creative Block Happens

It can be caused by stress, unrealistic deadlines, pressure, being ill, worries outside of your creative work, problems in your personal life although sometimes this can do the reverse and bring on a creative burst. Life crisis or trauma but again sometimes this can have the reverse effect and take your creativity levels into the stratosphere. Self doubt or low confidence levels can enter into the fray in connection with your creative mojo. Sometimes just lack of energy or sleep can have this effect but some have again reported the reverse. Sometimes it can be just creative burnout and the creative process is telling you to take time out for a while otherwise nothing will be happening.

My Tricks to beat Creative block

These may seem unorthodox but in my experience one of these options or a combination seems to do the job.

1. Just admit defeat, do something else and sleep on it and come back to your creative endeavour the following day. You will be shocked in the difference a day makes.<br>

2. Drop your creative levels down just a notch and stop trying to achieve perfection. Get yourself into a rough draft mode state build the foundations and the shell and then build up to a more polished end product at a later stage. It’s much easier. Stop trying to shoot for the moon.

3. If you really are determined to get things going even if everything is saying otherwise try these tricks that have worked for me.

a) Caffeine. This stuff not only wakes you up, keeps you awake and is a stimulant I have found it to be a creative stimulant as well. Getting in the zone is what it is called in Street Photography and Fine Art Street Photography the aims is to get you into the creative zone and caffeine (tea for me I’m not a coffee drinker) is where it’s at. It does work.<br>

b) Location. If where you are is not getting the creative juices going then try a different location. I have a number of places where when the creative battery is flat it seems to be charged up rapidly just by changing location.<br>

c) Completely different . Do something completely different for an hour...anything.....then come back in say an hour or two to what you were originally doing. This is similar to option 1 but instead of a day or 24 hours we are down to 1 or 2 hours OUT then back in again with a bang. you will be surprised at the results.<br>

d) Music. Don’t underestimate the power of music to stimulate the mind and get those creative juices flowing. If music is the result of being created by someone via a creative process then listening to that end result MUST have some impact on your creative battery. It just has to. Music is good, music videos are even better as you have a sound and visual element in the mix and photography is a visual medium. Decent set of headphones on your mobile...see what happens<br>

e) Street Art It’s a visual medium, it’s in a lot of places in London. Take a trip to the Banksy Tunnel in Waterloo or goto Shoreditch and Brick Lane and study the Street Art. If that doesn’t get the creative juices going and given a 10,000V electric shock there is no hope! You may even some some doing a work in progress.<br>

f) The Masters always have a mentor or two in the background of your creative endeavours. Use these when your creative battery is as flat as pancake and as a creative trigger. Mine are Saul Leiter and Daido Moriyama. Search for their images on your phone. Look at 50 or 100 or so and try to understand how they got those photos and then get out on the streets with that fresh stimulus buzzing in your brain. It’s the power of subliminal suggestion at play here. Powerful work can have powerful effects on your creative mojo and turn things around. They probably did the same thing.<br>

g) YOUR Past Work If all seems lost and you think you will never produce any work of any consequence again, go to YOUR website and look at YOUR portfolio of YOUR work. This is why a website is so important. If not go to your Insta. You probably haven’t looked at it for some time. See your work, be amazed by it and realise that something is there, whatever it is.....it hasn’t gone for good it’s just a **temporary** situation and use that as a confidence boost and stimulus to get your creative mojo back

h) Just Shoot This is for the photographers out there. If all else fails, just pick up your camera and just shoot loose and random stuff I mean just complete and utter garbage and see what happens. I’ve done this many times, suddenly without realising you are in the zone, you end up to your surprise taking a couple of “bangers” and you sit down and look at these masterpieces on the back of the screen scratching your head and wondering what on earth was going on before you took these photos!!!<br>

Finding Your Creative Mojo Again

All creatives go through this “Creative Mojo” thing. You will have days when you just feel in a creative mood, other days you are not feeling anything. Some days you can’t stop producing good work, other days nothing is happening. Using the above tips that have worked for me will get your creative mojo back again. If you clearly have the ability, that ability doesn’t change, I think it is something you are born with, others will say it can be nurtured. It’s not the ability that has gone it’s the creative spark. Either way creativity is a fragile thing, it comes it goes and then it comes back again

This article for the record is a result of “writers block” it just wasn’t happening. I had the title and that was about it, so I tried the option g) above as in instead of “Shoot” with a camera just start bashing on the keyboard writing some rough ideas and go from there. This is the result. This is forcing creativity. Some people say that creativity is subject to their “muse”, if their muse has gone no amount of forcing will make anything happen until their muse returns. That’s a topic for a whole different blog post.

Conclusions

For me personally my creativity comes and goes and blows with the wind and I just drift along with it. It seems to come in intense bursts of frenetic activity then you just collapse in a heap and recover. You can force it, this article is living proof of that, but I find there are so many factors involved with creativity and so many things that can stack against it. BUT once you know what causes of “creative blockage” and you know how to overcome it.... you will increase your creative productivity levels.

As they say in sport “form comes and goes……… but ability never changes” and this is so true of anything in the crreative field “creative mojo comes and goes but creative ability never changes”. Something to remember when you are going through a creative crisis.

What is meant by the term “*Getting into the Zone*” in Street Photography. What’s it all about and can it transform your street photography. This is a follow on Post from the Getting your Creative mojo back which is more relevant to Fine Art Street Photography.

Fine Art Street V Street Photography

With Fine Art Street Photography you are more concerned with line, shape, form, texture, light and shadow looking at the streets in a more creative and artistic way. A different sort of discipline will be at play with Pure Street Photography you are documenting, you are capturing moments, capturing characters, you are trying to capture these split second moments most people would miss.

To get those sort of shots you have got to get into what is called “the Zone” by people in Street Photography circles where you are in a heightened state. You are not walking around with a camera in a casual manner seeing the world as everybody else sees it, instead you are in this hyper state where you are on the alert and start to see things that most people will not see, looking for just the slightest thing and anticipating these moments which can be micro seconds in duration and catching that moment at the peak moment in time.

Go past that moment and the moment has gone, capture before and the moment is just forming but just hinting at what is to come as in the peak moment in time. To see and react and capture these moments you need to be in a heightened state.

Car Engines and Athletes?

Street Photography and the zone is very similar to Car Engines and Athletics or Sports. Car Engines perform at their best when they have been warmed up and don’t run so well when cold. The same thing can be applied to Athletics and Sports. You don’t just turn up at the starting blocks and then off you go there is normally some sort of preparation before hand where you have physically “warmed up” and also psychologically got yourself psyched up for the task in hand. It’s no difference in Street Photography but there is no athletic performance involved you are just walking with some body movements, it’s more a mental thing and what I call “the fight or flight” mode but just one level down from that. Street Photography is not a life or death situation it is one level down from that. To get to that heightened alert state, just like the car engine or the athlete you have to gradually warm up.

How I Get into the Zone

My personal approach which is totally out there. When you first arrive on the streets COLD, to get warmed up start taking photos of ANYTHING and I mean ANYTHING. Drains, Macro Shots of Double Yellow lines capturing the texture of the paint?, peoples Shoes, stick your camera in a shop window and take a couple of randoms, roof tops, car bonnets or headlights, puddles, graffiti or just running through a crowd taking some pure randoms, low down shots, high up shots, crank the iso to crazy high levels, , maybe just shoot at a shutter speed of 1/2 second on others..... in fact anything you can think off.

Get yourself trigger happy and what I like to call “loosened up” and more importantly “Warmed Up”. These will be mostly if not all dead shots. It helps if you are shooting digital and have at least one spare battery.After 5 or 10 minutes I would say maximum half to 1 hour of this.............. you may have something there but the chances are you will probably have nothing. The whole point of the exercise is not to get anything but to get WARMED up and reach a more heightened state where you are approaching “The Zone” where you are taking photos at your optimum performance level.

Once you are in “The Zone”

THEN once you have got yourself warmed up, get your settings back to what you normally use say F8, at least 1/250 sec shutter speed and ISO whatever I shoot normally 1600 on most days. Delete the photos that are no hopers which will probably be most of them. With film this will be different but maybe try taking photos with your mind to get you warmed up instead. Then you start shooting proper.... looking for moments, looking for characters and looking for those little things that most people are too busy to notice and miss.

Shooting “warm and loose” as opposed to “cold and rigid”

With this technique you will not be shooting cold and rigid you will be shooting warm and loose and it makes a huge difference. You are relaxed but in this heightened state. If you are operating at an EXTREMELY heightened state people will see you coming towards them and alarm bells will start ringing, women in particular will react accordingly thinking there is something wrong with this person and you will get nothing. When you are in that sort of hyper alert state you look like you are running from something or look a bit shifty.

Take this down a notch and you are just one step away from that, you appear on the outside relaxed but inside you are hyped up ready for capturing moments, nano seconds, strange characters, micro events, anything out of the ordinary. Most importantly when in this state you are seeing what most normal people don’t see, some split second moment with some connection between foreground and background and maybe a few elements in the frame inter connected just at that moment in time, that’s what makes a good street photo and to capture that you have to be in “The Zone”.

How long to get into “the Zone”?

Just like an athlete and just like a car engine as a photographer you have to warm up to reach that heightened state. For some people it can be as quick as a couple of minutes, some maybe half an hour or an hour. It varies from person to person and from day to day. Once you are in the zone you may take 30, 50 or 100 photos, some possible bangers may be in there... maybe not but these photos will be vastly superior to the shots that you would take if you just started from cold. This heightened state you can’t keep going all day long, more in bursts throughout the day. In between I normally have a break, or try standing in one spot and get shots that way, or maybe try more experimental shots just something different.

Word of warning!

If you stay in that heightened state which is one step away from the “fight or flight” response which is designed to confront danger or get away from danger, it’s designed to be endured for a short period of time, minutes at most. If you keep that level going for long periods of time it is mentally and physically exhausting. In summary you need to get yourself on a cliff edge or knife edge but one notch down from that so you blend into the crowd and people feel comfortable when you are around taking photos.

His pictures for me personally are mainly good but some are exceptional with people jumping off walls in New York in mid flight, he has shots where you would have to be hyper alert to get that shot or in “the Zone” and anticipate that situation. His street photography technique is what I call “the combine harvester” approach but you need a small camera for that...... something light and dainty and small form factor it would be much harder with a DSLR or decent sized mirrorless.

A Ricoh GR3 looks like a toy, a DSLR held up at eye or shoulder level waving it around like a crazy thing is going to create a completely different scenario. Check out his website at aaron-berger.com and you will see the result of his efforts. In the video you see him he is hyper alert but is also hyper relaxed and he just blends into the crowd and nobody takes any notice of him.In 4, 5 or 6 hours he will probably take a huge number of photos especially somewhere like New York, but will probably end up with a handful of decent photos and maybe just maybe the possibility of that elusive “banger” moment.

Conclusion

In summary just like a car engine and just like an athlete you have to get yourself into a state of peak or optimal performance before the task in hand. The only difference with Street Photography is it’s not a sprint and not even a marathon it’s more like say a 5000m race, some speed but a certain amount of pacing involved otherwise you will just burn out before the day has even finished. Ultimately the aim for Street Photography is to make it as enjoyable and productive as possible. When you go out again you are going to look forward to going out....and that’s what it is all about. The more time you spend out there the more photos you will get which increasess the chances of getting those exceptional shots that prove so elusive.

INTRODUCTION

This Street Photography Substack is aimed at all types of Street Photographer and creatives but the first love here is Fine Art Street Photography especially of the Black and White variety, if it is anything to do with London then even better! WHAT WILL THIS SUBSTACK FEATURE?

This substack will feature the latest news and updates that are happening at Pavement Pulse and also take an in depth look at street photography in general. Topics will include how to improve your creativity, where to find inspiration, where I find my inspiration, the ups and downs of being a street photographer in London, advanced techniques, a bit about gear (but to be honest I’m not a gear head) and further in depth articles covering a broader range of topics within the street photography realm.

Update frequency unknown but hopefully at least a couple of posts a month. Trying to decide whether to do a paid or free substack or maybe both. Something being chewed over.

MY BACKGROUND?

Personally I have been doing Street Photography since around 2023 with some dabblings way back in 2016 (street style) which progressed to Street in 2017 all in colour. Prior to that I was a working photographer as a Celebrity Photographer specialising in Female Celebrities in London and further information can be found on my other website that is in my name at frankjohn.com and my newly launched frankjohnlondon.com which is currently under development. I have on and off about 8 years experience in Street Photography with the latest passion being Black and White Street Photography leaning into the Fine Art spectrum but all based in London which is at my website Pavement Pulse.

MY STYLE?

Street Photography style prediction is embracing that right out there Jap Street Photographer Daido Moriyama book as demonstrated in “Farewell Photography” and combining it with Mark Cohen another boundary pushing Street Photographer along with a good helping of Saul Leiter and see what happens. I’m not a sharp and shiny photographer, more into stretching the limits of light and shadow with dense blacks and blown out highlights and dubious sharpness which is my trademark? It’s not about the technicals for me….. it’s more about the creative expression within the frame.
